During the 1920s, business interests in Portland and along the north coast argued for a new road they called Short Route to the Shore. In the 1930s, the Highway Department finally settled on the Wolf Creek route, the road we know today as U S 26, The Sunset Highway. Highway officials considered Necanicum Junction the western end of the Wolf Creek project, but Manzanita developers used the new road to boost their town.
